# ITIN document checklist

Answer three questions about the applicant. The tool lists the documents a Form W-7 package needs, from the IRS rules.

Use the tool on the [web page](https://itinagents.fyi/tools/itin-document-checklist). It works without JavaScript.

## How to use it

1. Choose who is applying for the itin?.
2. Enter does the applicant have a valid passport?.
3. Enter will you attach a us federal tax return?.
4. Read the result.

## How it works

The IRS publishes the document rules in the Form W-7 instructions. A valid passport is the only single document that proves both identity and foreign status.

Without a passport, the applicant combines two documents from the IRS list of 13. At least one must have a photo.

Form W-7 normally goes with a US federal tax return. The IRS instructions list the exceptions.

This tool states the rules. It does not give tax advice.

> These are the IRS document rules for Form W-7, not tax advice. The IRS instructions are the authority.

## Questions

### Do I mail my passport to the IRS?

Not if a certifying acceptance agent verifies it. An agent checks the original and certifies it, so the passport stays with you.

### How many documents do I need without a passport?

Two, from the IRS list of 13. At least one must show a photo.

### Does the tool store my answers?

No. The check runs on the page and nothing is sent or saved.
