Read the IRS acceptance agent list

Choose and work with an ITIN acceptance agent. Lesson 1, 12 min.

The IRS publishes its acceptance agent lists on irs.gov. There is one page for each US state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and one page for each place abroad where agents work. Each row gives a name, an address and a phone number.

What an acceptance agent is

The IRS defines an acceptance agent as an individual or an entity that the IRS authorizes to help alien individuals get an ITIN. To join the program, an agent applies to the IRS and completes mandatory IRS training. The IRS runs compliance reviews of agents. An agent that does not cooperate with them can be removed from the program.

The asterisk

The IRS list marks acceptance agents (AAs) with an asterisk. An entry without an asterisk is a certifying acceptance agent (CAA). This site uses the same split: one category for certifying acceptance agents and one for acceptance agents.

How this site uses the list

This site restates the IRS list. It shows the name, address and phone number that the IRS publishes. It does not add fees, hours or services that the IRS does not state. The IRS list mixes firms and named people. This site lists businesses and holds out rows that look like a named person. So a person who is on the IRS page may not be on this site. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the IRS. A listing is a record, not an endorsement.

Check before you book

  • Open the IRS page for your state or country and find the agent there. Each IRS page shows the date of its last review.
  • Check the asterisk on the IRS page, not only the category on this site.
  • Call the number that the IRS lists. Confirm the agent's name and kind.
